HLS: 6.1.1885 Basel, 8.5.1965 Basel, ref., von Basel. Sohn des Carl. Bruder des Carl. ​Emilie Thurneysen, Tochter des Emil, Bandfabrikanten. 1903-08 studierte K. Theologie in Lausanne, Basel und Marburg und hielt sich 1908-09 in Paris, Oxford und Edinburgh auf. 1910-21 wirkte er als Pfarrer in Stein am Rhein, 1921-54 als Frühprediger von St. Martin in Basel. Er bekleidete führende Positionen im schweiz. Protestantismus. So war er 1933-54 Kirchenratspräsident von Basel-Stadt, ab 1935 Vorstandsmitglied des Schweiz. Evangelischen Kirchenbundes und 1941-54 dessen Präs. sowie 1936-59 Präs. der Basler Mission.

Ab den 1920er Jahren unterhielt K. enge Verbindungen zur kirchl.-ökumen. Bewegung. Er nahm an allen wichtigen Konferenzen zwischen 1925 (Stockholm) und 1954 (Evanston, Illinois) teil, sass in der internat. Leitung des Weltverbandes der Christl. Vereine Junger Männer, war beteiligt am Aufbau des Ökumen. Rates der Kirchen und gehörte nach dessen Konstituierung u.a. 1948-54 dem Zentral- und Exekutivausschuss an. In der Periode des Nationalsozialismus trug K. wesentlich dazu bei, den Informationsaustausch zwischen den Kirchen aufrechtzuerhalten, etwa durch regelmässige Kontakte zu George Bell, dem anglikanischen Bf. von Chichester. In der Schweiz leitete er Nachrichten über die Gefährdung der Juden an polit. Behörden weiter und forderte diese zu mehr Grosszügigkeit gegenüber den Flüchtlingen auf. 1943-46 präsidierte er das Schweiz. kirchliche Hilfskomitee für evang. Flüchtlinge. K. erhielt 1929 den Ehrendoktor der Univ. Heidelberg und war Ehrendozent an der theol. Fakultät der Univ. Basel.
